Abstract:

Violence against women within the couple relationship context is a problem which has been located in the public agenda. It is mainly associated with gender factor. Therefore it is crucial to incorporate a gender perspective in order to understand and intervene upon this phenomenon. A qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews and applying content analysis, to analyze if the discourse about the tackling of violence against women within the context of a couple relationship, that hold the professionals of Valparaíso’s Primary Care Mental Health Units (physicians, psychologists, social workers), includes perceptions, knowledge and ideas based on gender perspective. There is consensus on how to deal with battered women, for all of them is very important to generate an empathic, containment, therapeutic space. Multidisciplinary and intersectoral work is valued. Some practices mentioned include risk of revictimization. In general, their discourses about the way they make their interventions, lack of intention towards empowering women from a gender perspective, with exception of some psychologists (females and males). This study could give a critical evaluation about the different discourses of the Primary Care mental Health´s caregivers tackling gender violence.
