Abstract:

Due to the centrality of sexual route in HIV transmission, this paper analyses the discourses on sexuality among health professionals and clients from a Counseling and Testing Service (VCT) in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The methodology included direct observation of individual pre-test counseling and the use of 384 questionnaires and 14 interviews with clients. According to the findings counseling is characterized by filling out the epidemiological surveillance form; due to the lack of health service structure, there are inaccuracies in the process of gathering and recording the clients’ sexual practices. During counseling, DST/Aids prevention discourse is focused on the type and the number of sexual partners, on HIV risk and on condom use. This approach does not favor the dialogue about the sexual trajectory of the client and his/her doubts and demands related to sexuality and Aids. The questionnaire and interviews indicated that homo, hetero e bisexual categories were not familiar to the clients. To carry out counseling as a space for dialogue and interaction, it is recommended that: counseling should be dissociated from filling out the surveillance form; the meaning of sexual experiences of individuals throughout life should be incorporated in counseling training; the structure of the health service has to be reinforced.
