Abstract:

Objectives: To estimate the prevalences of nutritional status and weight dissatisfaction in adolescents aged 10-19 years. Methods: Population-based cross-sectional study in two stages, conducted in Campinas-SP. The nutritional status was classified by BMI percentile for age of the World Health Organization. Dissatisfaction with weight was obtained by reporting those who would like to gain or lose weight. The prevalences and 95% Confidence Intervals of nutritional status and (dis)satisfaction with weight were calculated. The associations with sociodemographic variables were verified by the Rao Scott χ2 test. Results: 822 adolescents, with a mean age of 14.1 years were analyzed. It was classified with eutrophia 64.7% of the boys and 75.4% of the girls and with overweight 30.5% and 22.2%, respectively. Compared with the boys, 34.5% were eutrophic, 45.3% were overweight and 77.1% were obese. Compared with the girls, the dissatisfaction was 52.0% among the eutrophic, 63.6% those who were overweight and 75.2% with obesity. Conclusions: There was high prevalences of overweight, especially in boys and those aged 10-14 years, and the higher prevalences of weight dissatisfaction in girls and those aged 15-19 years.
