Abstract:

Abstract
Objective: The aim of the present study is to verify the association between the body fat distribution and breast cancer in women of Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil. Method: A case-control design was used in this study. Between January and October of 2005, 100 women with histopathological diagnosis of breast cancer were compared to an out-patient control group (400 women). The collected anthropometric variables were: body mass (kg), height, waist circumference (WC), and hip circumference. Results: No association was found between the body mass index (BMI) and the waist/hip ratio (WHR) with the occurrence of breast cancer. In relation to the WC, it was observed that women with this measurement increased (≥ 88 cm) showed 2.08 times more chance to develop the disease than those with normal or moderate measurements (< 80 cm – 87 cm). When these women were grouped by menopausal state (pre- and post-) and anthropometric variables, only WC showed an association OR adjusted= 3.15.
Conclusions: Fat accumulation on the upper part of the body (WC ≥ 88 cm) is a predictor of breast cancer, especially in pre-menopause women.
Key Words: Anthropometry, abdominal obesity, breast cancer, case-control study.
