Abstract:

The aim of this study was to estimate the association between dual sensory loss (hearing and vision) and cognitive decline in older adults in southern Brazil. This cross-sectional research used data from the 3rd wave of the EpiFloripa Elderly Study (2017/2019), involving individuals aged 60 years or older living in urban areas of Florianópolis, SC. The dependent variable was cognitive decline, assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination, while the main independent variable was sensory loss. Logistic regression analysis was performed. A total of 1,335 older adults participated, with a higher frequency of women (63.0%) and white individuals (88.3%). Regarding sensory loss, 10.8% presented dual sensory loss, and 20.5% showed cognitive decline. In the final model, individuals with dual sensory loss had a 4.21 times higher chance (95% CI: 2.06–8.59) of cognitive decline. Those with isolated hearing loss (OR: 1.98; 95% CI: 1.13–3.45) also showed a higher likelihood of the outcome. Older adults with combined hearing and visual impairments had a 321% higher chance of experiencing cognitive decline. These findings suggest that simultaneous loss of two sensory functions may exacerbate the impact on the cognitive capacity of older adults.
