Abstract:

Introduction: The elderly population in Brazil has considerably been growing, and this demographic transition has increasingly presented scenery where these elderly people are living under the responsibility of their relatives. However, it is believed that the development of a training program could contribute to a improvement of the services provided by these caregivers, promoting quality of life for seniors this way. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a Training Program for Informal Caregivers on the quality of life of elderly people which presented a lack of self-care. Methodology: Initially, there were home visits in 15 elderly patients with deficit of self-care and applied the questionnaire SF-36. Later, it was developed a multi-professional features training program with the caregivers for these elderly. After 02 months of completing the training program the questionnaire SF-36 was applied again to verify the effectiveness of the program of training on the quality of life of these elderly. Results: On average it is noticed a significant increase of scores related to the "mental health" and a significant decrease of scores related to the field "limitations on physical aspects." Conclusion: The formation of informal groups of caregivers should be encouraged, led by professionals from health area, aiming at the promotion of knowledge, exchange experiences and discuss the best inherent strategies in the act of caring.
