Abstract:

The aim of this work is to investigate the elements that comprise the significance of disability for the elderly residents of the city of Bambuí/MG. This is a qualitative approach, in which the model of signs, significance and actions was used in both data collection and assessment. 57 subjects registered in the primary care units were interviewed with an age range61 to 96. The participants understood functionality/disability (disease) as “being able/not being able to” of doing something or “being a burden” (illness) to someone. “Not being able” refers to the inexorable functional loss inherent to the ageing process, whilst “being a burden” would be seen as a permanent pain and suffering generating status to both patient and care giver. The way to deal with the “not being able” condition is related to resignation. On the other hand, praying is the way to deal with “being burden”. Religiousness and resignation can be greatly helpful during critical moments. However, they also reveal the lack of resources, support alternatives and intervention in the most severe cases.
