Abstract:

Brazil, despite its advances in socioeconomic indicators still performs markedly uneven, regarding economic, environmental and social indicators. This situation results from an unequal and exclusionary historical process. In this paper we selected the Human Development Index - HDI and some other social, economic, environmental and health indicators. We selected the municipalities that had the lowest HDI in the country in 2000 and compared its evolution between 2000 and 2010 by means of indicators relating to the economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainable development. These municipalities have an HDI classified as low (<0.500), and correspond to countries such as Laos, Yemen, Haiti and Madagascar. At the national level, data show a significant improvement of economic indicators (decrease of 23% to 8,9% of people living on less than ¼ of the minimum wage); social (increase of 86,5% to 90,2% of literacy in women), and the indicator relating to environmental pillar, access to general network water which also has had improved in a lesser extent (an increase of 81% to 85%). To achieve sustainable development and quality of life, improvement of sanitation and education indicators should be a priority for Brazil.
