Abstract:

The book \"History of Public Health - Major Epidemics in Brazil in the 20th and 21st Centuries\" is a 2022 work that, through the history of different diseases (rabies, influenza, meningitis, COVID-19, sporotrichosis), demonstrates the impact of globalization and social determinants in the spread of diseases, as well as discussing government measures taken at each moment and their effect on the incidence of the condition analyzed. The central message of the work highlights that, even if there is no way to prevent epidemicshappening, it is possible to have greater control over their evolution based on examplesthe past, with epidemiological surveillance, prevention measures, trust in scientific knowledge being essential to good management and improvements in socioeconomic conditions, with a reduction in inequality.
