Abstract:

It is proposed to characterize the elderly users of dental services offered by the Unified National Health System, as well as the associated factors, whereas the principle of equity. This is an analytical cross-sectional study with hierarchical modeling, conducted from a probabilistic complex sample by conglomerates elderly (65-74 years) living in a municipality of great population size. Independent variables included were related to: socio-demographic characteristics, access to information on health, behavior / health care system to oral health and health outcomes. The descriptive analysis, bivariate and multiple hierarchical. Of the 480 elderly included, 138 (31.2%) used dental services from the SUS. The use of these services was larger as decreased per capita income and education thereof, lower among those who had not realized the self-examination of the mouth and higher among those subjects who used dental services for procedures that were not routine. In addition, people who have had the relationship affected by oral health and a negative perception of their appearance used the SUS more. It concludes that the use of dental services in the SUS was most prevalent among the elderly with more unfavorable conditions, suggesting equity in the use of such services
