Abstract:

COVID-19 pandemic has unevenly affected regions, countries and different ethnic-racial segments. Socio-environmental factors were associated with worse disease’s evolution, with a greater chance of mortality in people in vulnerable situations. This study aim was to inves-tigate the association between the proportion of vulnerable population (black, brown and indigenous people) and mortalityCOVID-19 in Brazil,March 2020 to February 2021. Mortality rate ratios and respective 95% Confidence Intervals (95%CI) were estimat-ed, using negative binomial regression models. Statistically significant associations were found between the proportion of these populations and mortality rates, with emphasis on black race/color in the first four months, mixed race in the second and indigenous people in the third four months, in which every 10% increase in the proportion of these populations an increase of 54% (95%CI: 1-142%), 16% (95%CI: 5-27%) and 27% (95%CI 3-64%) in mor-tality rates were observed respectively; highlighting the existence of ethnic-racial inequities in COVID-19 mortality in Brazil and that efforts must be made to mitigate health inequali-ties, an expression of the perpetuation of structural racism and social exclusion of historical-ly vulnerable groups.
