Abstract:

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze child health carethrough the Family Health Program (FHP) from Teixeiras, MG, Brazil. Methods: Descriptive transversal study through teh application of a questionnaire to 161 mothers of children aged less than 2 years. A specific score system was used to analyze the dimensions of the structure, process and result and its respective attributes, classifying the town in the incipient, intermediary and advanced sceneries. Results: The dimensions of the structure, process and result were in synthesis a intermediary (49.6%) scenery to the FHP, characterized by a fragmented child health care, although it presented some advances in the organization of the care designated to this group. Were considered incipient the physical installations, the quality of the care destinated to diarrhea and respiratory infection control, the communitarian participation and the interdisciplinarity. The observed advances were associated to the program’s welcoming. However, the the small number of preventive and those for promotion of the health by FHP demonstrate that the program is a support to the hospital and another place for basic medical care. Conclusion: It was verified that the action of the FHP on child health care deviates from the proposal of reorientation of the hegemonic model, through which FHP was created, impairing important strategies to prevent diseases, as well as health promotion to this group. The next step is to disseminate the knowledge obtained in this study to the manager of this town and staff from FHP, making it possible a partnership between this service and the university to improve the quality of the sanitary attention.
