Abstract:

The nutritional care has a great relevance in prenatal period and the family health teams have an important place in the coverage expand of prenatal care. In that way, this study aimed to evaluate the prenatal nutritional care process in seven family’s health units in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2008 and 230 pregnant women were interviewed in seven units in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Copies of the women’s prenatal cards were obtained. The process conformity with Ministry of Health standard norms was evaluated. The results indicated that assessment and record on the prenatal card of blood pressure and weight and prescription of supplements and blood tests are established parts of routine prenatal care, but indicates either an under-recording on the prenatal card of the height, initial weight, edema, BMI by gestational age and laboratory tests results. A lack of specific orientation on adequate use of the iron supplement, food consumption and weight gain was observed. The results revealed a big demand by prenatal nutritional care and deficiencies in this process and showed the importance of training Family Health teams and of the implantation of Family Health Support Centers.
