Abstract:

The Prenatal and Birth Humanization Program (PHPN) establishes a minimum number of procedures to be offered to all pregnant women during prenatal care. It is a cross-sectional study, with descriptive and analytic approach, using survey datathe Birth in Sergipe. The research was conducted between June 2015 and April 2016 with 768 postpartum women, proportionally distributed among all maternity hospitals in the state (n= 11). The data were collected through interviews and patients´prenatal cards. The results showed a high coverage of prenatal care (99.3%; n= 763), but little more than half of these women starts prenatal care before 16 weeks of gestation (57%; n= 435) and 74.7% (n= 570) have six or more number of appointments. There were 16.6% (n= 127) of pregnant women considered at risk of complications and almost half continued monitoring of the prenatal care with professional nurses. Only 61.3% (n= 468) were advised about which maternity care service to give birth, and 29.4% (n= 226) reported searching more than one health service for admission in labour and birth. There was a high prenatal care coverage in Sergipe, however prenatal care has not fully adhere to the PHPN recommendations.
