Abstract:

The present study aims to characterize the epidemiological profile of victims of scorpion stings and snake bites and to evaluate the adequacy of antivenom serum. Cross-sectional study whose data sources were the notifications of accidents by venomous animalsthe Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação of the municipality of de Vitória da Conquista. There were included the informations of accidents by scorpion or snakeJuly 2016 to June 2017 attended in municipality. The data obtained and the variables of interest were analyzed according to the questions of this study. During the observation period, there were 293 victims of accidents by venomous animals. Of these, 149 (50.9%) were men and 114 (3.9%) were aged between 20-59 years. There were 235 (80.9%) cases of scorpion stings and 58 (19.1%) de snake bites. Of these, 203 (69.3%) were classified as mild and in 200 (68.5%) cases serum therapy was prescribed for these patients. Regarding the adequacy of the prescriptions, 172 (59.7%) were judged inadequate and of these “the use of ampoules higher than recommended” was the most frequent (124; 72.1%). The inappropriate prescribing of of antivenom serum happened in about 60% of cases evaluated. Although, the most of accidents was classified like mild, in young men.
