Abstract:

This a cross-sectional study made in Fortaleza, Ceará, 2009, which included 458 teenagers, this study analized teenagers’ exposure to criminal violence, describing the teenagers’ access to weapons, abusive use of alcohol, use of illegal drugs and self-esteem with association between teenagers’ socioeconomic, school and family characteristics. A self-applicable questionnaire and/or interviews were used for data collection, based on self-esteem scale, CAGE questionnaire, and others variables. To descriptive statistical evaluation using Pearson’s chi-square test, at 95% reliability. Out of total participants (458), 17.7% were considered exposed to criminal violence. Significant variables for exposure to that violence included: place of birth (p=0.020), school absenteeism (p<0.001), the father as the head of the family (p=0.026), alcohol-addicted parents (p<0.001), good/very good family relationships (p=0.009), and parents’ dissatisfaction with their children’s friends (p<0.001). The study confirms the literature on the theme by showing that social disorganization in great urban centers, involvement with alcohol, school absenteeism and family’s vulnerability contribute to teenager’s involvement with criminal violence.
