Abstract:

The objective was to analyze the trends, impact in life expectancy, and effect of the main associated socioeconomic factors with homicide mortality in Colombia between 2000 and 2014 at the departmental level, by sex and age groups. Standardized mortality rates and years of life lost in under 85 years of age were calculated and a multivariate regression analysis was performed using a negative binomial regression for panel data with fixed-effects to analyze the associated socioeconomic factors with homicide incidence. The reduction of homicide mortality in Colombia was corroborated, which was generalized at a departmental level, but it didn’t happened homogenously. A higher mortality risk in males was found, particularly between the ages of 15 and 49 years of age. Economic growth and inequality were negatively associated with mortality due to homicides; unemployment was positively associated; and poverty had no effect on the mortality rate. To investigate the main associated factors with homicidal violence between departments is complex, but indispensable due to its impact in economic and social development, given that it affects mainly the population in productive ages, with ample public health consequences and high costs of health care services.
