Abstract:

Objectives: Investigating associations between life satisfaction and sociodemographic variables, health conditions, independence to performing IADL, social involvement and social support among elderly caregivers and non-caregivers, as well as between life satisfaction and the intensity of caregiving stress. Method: In a sample of the 338 caregivers, selected according to two items of the Brazilian version of the Elders Life Stress Inventory; 338 non-caregivers were selected at random from those that did not accomplished the condition of being caregivers. Data were derived from self-report questionnaires and scales. Results: Among caregivers with low levels of satisfaction and high levels of stress there were more seniors with insomnia; with fatigue symptoms, with diseases e worst performing IADL and among those with high satisfaction and low stress there were more participants with high levels of social support. Insomnia (OR = 2,56), depression (OR = 2,18) and fatigue (OR = 2,00) related with low satisfaction among caregivers; fatigue (OR = 3,12), depression (OR = 2,85) e low social support (OR = 2,43) among non-caregivers. Conclusions: Instrumental, psychological and informative support can improve the quality of life and the quality of care provided by elderly caregivers, mostly if they are affected by bad health, and psychosocial conditions and low life satisfaction.
