Abstract:

This review aimed to analyze factors associated with adherence to the treatment of hepatitis C. It was included articles published in English, Spanish and Portuguese, in the databases: Lilacs, Medline, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus and CINAHL, between the years 2000 to 2019. Initially, 540 publications were obtained and, subsequently, applying the established inclusion criteria, 22 articles were selected. The percentage of non-adherence to treatment ranged from 12% to 32%. The variables identified as facilitators of adherence were: receiving treatment for psychiatric disorders identified during treatment, having knowledge about medications and disease, receiving less complex treatment with a greater possibility of cure, fewer adverse events, social support, doctor–patient communication and/or relationships and identified as barriers to adherence: presence of depressive symptoms and other mental disorders, abuse of alcohol and psychoactive substances, education, age, ethnicity, unemployment, not having a steady partner, stigma, distance from the health service, complexity and adverse effects from the treatment. This review allowed the identification of gaps in research on adherence.
