Abstract:

The aim of this study is to assess the association between body image and sociodemographic variables and health behaviours behaviors, according to sex. Data6,289 women and 5,188 men (35-59 years old) participantsthe ELSA-Brasil baseline were assessed using multinomial regression. Among women, the odds of dissatisfaction with being thin was higher among those with low schooling and those who eat fruits weekly. Moderate physical activity reduced the odds of this type of dissatisfaction by 50%. Higher odds of dissatisfaction with being overweight were observed among married women, those who practice weak physical activity and former smokers. Men with intermediate schooling level and excessive alcohol consumption had a 50% higher odds of dissatisfaction with their low weight. Weak or moderate physical activity increased that odds by 75% and 94% respectively.
Among men, the practice of weak and moderate physical activity increased the odds of dissatisfaction with being overweight. These findings contribute to reinforce those unhealthy habits, behaviours influence the dissatisfaction with body image and these patterns are differentiated according to sex.
