Abstract:

This study aims to determine the frequency of potential drug-drug interactions (PDI) in elderly hospitalized and associated factors. It is a cross-sectional study in a teaching hospital. The dependent variable was the occurrence of potential drug interactions identified using DrugReax software. Clinical manifestation of PDI related to adverse drug reactions were also identified univariate analysis (chi-square) and multivariate (logistic regression) were performed to analyze the association between occurrence of IMP and independent variables. Overall 237 elderly, the prevalence of IMP was 87.8% and ADR related to interactions was 6.8%. Multivariate analysis showed a positive association between the detection of PDI (OR 8.6, 95% CI 2.5 to 30.0), and hospitalization for diagnosis of disease of the circulatory system and number of medications > 14 (OR 9.8, 95 2.8 to 34.3%). The study showed a high prevalence of PDI among the elderly, but reduced prevalence of ADR. Also found a positive association between PDI and hospitalization for diagnosis of disease of the circulatory system and number of medications >14. The identification of factors associated with PDI allows drive prevention measures to population more exposed to adverse events populations.
