Abstract:

The objective was to analyze the prevalence and associated factors regarding suicidal ideation among transvestites and transsexuals. Transversal study accomplished between 2015 and 2016 with transvestites (n=22) and transsexuals (n=36) associated to four civil organizations from the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. One evaluated the differences among the categories through the following tests: Chi-Square, Fisher Exact Test and Likelihood Ratio. A multiple analysis was made using Poisson Regression with a robust variance. The suicidal ideation prevalence was of 41.4% (CI95% 41.3-54.51%), with 13.79% among transvestites (CI95% 4.91-22.66%) and 27.61% among transsexuals (CI95% 16.08-39.08%). One observed that the ones who showed a higher suicidal ideation were as follows: a history of violence in school (PR=2.05; IC95% 1.08-3.87) and with individuals classified with a moderate or serious level of depression (PR=3.86; IC95% 1.51-9.83). Unfavorable contexts in school and the presence of a depressive symptomatology seem to prejudice the mental health and to collaborate with the suicidal ideation among transvestites and transsexuals.
