Abstract:

The aim of this study was to investigate the factors associated with reading of Child Health Record (CHR) by mothers and filling of this instrument by health professionals, in Feira de Santana-Bahia, 2009. This is a cross-sectional study with application forms to 727 mothers of children under one year of age. The outcomes studied were: maternal reading of the CHR, and completion of weight and length measures by health professionals. Logistic regression analysis was used being considered as significant p≤0,05. The prevalence of reading, weight and length measurements were, respectively, 81.1%, 68.9% and 47.3%. Mothers with a higher level of education had a greater chance of reading the CHR. Recording of the child’s weight and height was more prevalent when the mothers were under 35 years old. Use of pediatric care in the coverage areas of the Family Health Program or the Community Health Agents was positively associated with the length’s record in the CHR, despite the low prevalence of records. Age of child greater than six months was positively associated with all outcomes. It demonstrated the underutilization of CHR by mothers and health professionals, indicative of the need for educational training of health professionals and guidance to mothers on the importance and management of it.
