Abstract:

This study identifies factors associated with unspecified and ill defined causes of death in the state of Amazonas (AM), Brazil. A cross-sectional study was developed including 90,439 non foetal deaths of residents in AM2006 to 2012. Hierarchical multinomial logistic modelling provided odds ratios estimates of unspecified and ill defined causes of death. Ill defined and unspecified cause of death proportional mortality was, respectively, 16.6% and 9.1%. Ill defined causes presented a decreasing trend, restricted to the last two years for unspecified causes. Unspecified causes of death were associated with residence and occurrence of death outside capital, public streets and roads, female sex, ages between 10 and 49 years, brown colour and when certified by forensic doctors. Ill defined causes of death were associated with residence and occurrence outside capital, at home, ages 40 years and older, non white colour, not being single, low education level, under medical assistance and when the certifier was unknown. Ill defined and unspecified cause mortality decreased between 2006 and 2012 in AM, and were associated with space, time, demographic, socioeconomic and health care related characteristics.
