Abstract:

The aim of this study was to analyze the factors correlated with the mortality rate from violence in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Data were used for 24 LAC countries between 2000 and 2021. A fixed-effects model was estimated, reporting the coefficients and their 95% confidence intervals, to assess the effect of changes in demographic indicators (median age of the population) and socioeconomic indicators (annual rate of change in GDP, unemployment rate, infant mortality rate and average schooling) on the intentional homicide rate (THI) and on the interpersonal violence mortality rate (TMVI). In addition, the existence of distinct effects was evaluated when TMVI is analyzed by sex. Overall, the results showed that worse socioeconomic indicators (lower annual rate of change in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), higher unemployment rate, and higher infant mortality rate) are correlated with higher THI and TVMI. In addition, the results also suggest that the trend of population aging in LAC is favorable to an alleviation of mortality due to violence (for TMVI: coefficient -7,53%, CI95%: -0.1184; -0,0322). These findings suggest that public policy strategies should adopt a multidimensional approach in order to promote the security and well-being of society.
