Abstract:

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the factors associated with occupational stress among dentists working in the private sector in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. It included 384 professionals from the state of Parana between August and October 2020 through an online form. Two outcomes presented occupational stress proxy (1) concern and worry and (2) preparation and safety at work during the pandemic. The independent variables were grouped according to the explanatory theoretical model into individual, organizational and extra-organizational factors (p<0.05). Associations were tested by bi- and multivariate logistic regression. Despite being prepared and safe (78.1%), professionals felt anxious and worried (64.8%) about clinical care. Younger women who did not receive guidance on security measures were more likely to report insecurity and unpreparedness. Younger professionals who did not participate in decision-making and "sometimes" had someone to help in a four-handed work were more likely to feel anxious and worried. In addition to individual factors, organizational factors at work are associated with occupational stress among dentists in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
