Abstract:

This study aimed to identify and analyze the meaning of the process of dying for family caregivers of elderly patients in palliative care. It was qualitative research using interview. The data were analyzed by analysis of content. The presence of chronical diseases that take the elderly person to need some palliative care requires the family caregivers a serie of complex and ambivalent feelings. The proximity and inevitability of death of the beloved one help to intensify these feelings, but also allow the caregiver to think over how to live with this experience. Given this complexity, it becomes clear that the palliative crew need to work with family caregivers, to try to alleviate this situation.
