Abstract:

The loss of a loved one has impact over the family dynamics, so the family system changes and new arrangements are required. A proper family functioning, with openness for communication and disclosure of feelings and thoughts, and cohesion among their members can contribute to an adaptive adjustment to the loss. The present study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on family dynamics during in the grieving process. The search was conducted considering papers published from January 1980 to June 2013 in the databases EBSCO, Web of Knowledge and BIREME. Of the 389 articles found, only 15 articles met all inclusion criteria. The selected studies presented evidence that dysfunctional families manifest greater psychopathological symptoms, greater psychosocial morbidity, poor social functioning, difficulty in accessing community resources, lower functional capacity at work, and a grief process that could be considered complicated. Family conflict were also identified as a factor that can contribute to the development of complicated grief, as well as cohesion, expression of affection and good communication in families can be considered as mitigating the symptoms of grief.
