Abstract:

Post-graduate training, provision and fixation of medical professionals in primary care are important challenges yet to be overcome in Brazil. Recently, there was a strong expansion of Family Medicine Residency Programs in the country, with little information about this process. The aim of this study is to explore the municipal health managers’ perspective about the role of Family Medicine Residency Programs and their understanding about these programs as a mean for professional training and the improvement of healthcare. Questionnaires capturing quantitative and qualitative information were send via email to municipal healthcare managers in places were Family Medicine Residency Programs are established. Descriptive statistics and content analysis were performed. Forty eight managers answered the questionnaire. There is an effort to incorporate family physicians into the health care system. Municipal healthcare managers understand that those programs positively impact health care systems, strengthening the attributes of primary care and qualifying professional training. This study highlights the importance of recognizing municipal healthcare managers as key stakeholders in the process of consolidating residency training in family medicine as the gold-standard for post-graduate medical training for primary care in Brazil.
