Abstract:

Objective: Evaluate the impact of Family medicine residence in the referral rate in primary care. Methods: Transversal analytic study of 375.645 consultations and 34.776 referrals made by 123 primary care physicians in the year of 2016 relating the referral rate to characteristics of the doctors (gender, age, Family medicine training), of the patients (gender and age) and of the service (general population and active population). Results: Family medicine residence training had a significant reduction in the referral rate from primary care (8,06% X 10,92%), CI:(1,55;4,17), p<0,0001. This reduction persisted in the multivariate analysis, after adjusting for all the possible cofounding variables. There was no difference between the referral rates of doctors without Family medicine residence, whether they had or not passed the board test. Doctors with Family medicine residence had lower referral rates for gynecology, psychiatry and pediatric and more referrals for ophthalmology. Conclusion: The study showed that doctors with family medicine residence had significant lower referral rates from primary care.
