Abstract:

The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence and some characteristics associated with helmet use in two cities in Colombia. We used both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The prevalence of helmet’s use in motorcycle conductors was mayor in Ibague (98.1%) that in Valledupar (82.4%); in passengers of Valledupar city was not more than 2%. Men were2.1 times more likely to wear helmets than women (IC 95:1.6-2.7). With qualitative technical factors explaining the reasons for use/non-use of helmets (hygienic, climatic, aesthetic and safety) in Valledupar were identified. The helmet is a measure that protects during a traffic collision; however, the use prevalence is not ideal. It is important that transit authorities, health and civil society be organized to design and implement measures to strengthen the use of this element of personal protection.
