Objective: To assess the consumption of risky and protective foods for non-communicable chronic diseases and its association with body fat by healthy workers from a public University of Recife, Pernambuco. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 267 adults. Two food groups were considered: risky and protective foods. Food consumption was assessed by a food frequency questionnaire with measurements converted to scores. The conceptual model considered sociodemographic, behavioral, and anthropometric variables.
Results: A high prevalence of overweight and low consumption of protective foods was evidenced. Medians of scores of risky and protective foods consumption were similar in all variables analyzed, except for a higher consumption of protective foods observed in obese individuals (p=0.000).
Conclusions: The study highlights the complexity involved in the relation between food consumption, body fat, and non-communicable chronic disease, indicating the need of future studies with more appropriate designs to provide rationale for future interventions in this population.
