Abstract:

The characteristics of the food environment can interfere with physical access to healthy foods and accentuate health inequalities. The presence of food swamps, that is, the greater availability of establishments that sells mostly ultra-processed products in relation to those that sell healthier options, associated with vulnerability characteristics of the neighborhoods, may be related to the consumption of unhealthy foods. This study identified the spatial distribution of these establishments and verified if there is and food swamps are located in Campinas, São Paulo. Fast food restaurants, open-air food markets and supermarkets’ addresses were geocoded. City Regional administrations (ARs) with low socioeconomic status according to the 2010 Census, and with a greater availability of fast food restaurants compared to open-air food markets and supermarkets were considered food swamps. Wealthier ARs had the highest concentration of all types of food establishments. In Campinas, of 18 ARs, five were considered food swamps. The findings reinforce the need for actions to improve exposure to healthy foods in the most vulnerable neighborhoods.
