Abstract:

The article aimed to describe profile and functional capacity of elderly people from the rural areas of Pelotas, considering sociodemographic characteristics, sex, income, education and chronic diseases not transmissible. It is a cross-sectional, quantitavive study of a 820 elderly people between july and october 2014. We used the chi-square test of heterogeneity Pearson for nominal exposures and the trend test for those ordinal. The sampled group consisted, predominatly, of women aged between 60 and 69, self-declared white and living with a partner. Regarding functional capacity to perform basic daily activities, 81.8% (670) of the individuals were classified as independente and 54.6% (448) were deemed completely indepent for instrumental activities of daily living. Variables such as sex (male) , age (60-69) and no heart problems were closely associated with Basic ADLs, whereas Instrumental ADLs associated with age ( 60-69), income (1-2), education ( 5-8 years) and no osteoporosis. This study concludes that the elderly, mostly, were functionally able to perform the activities of daily living, both basic and instrumental and it is expected that the results and the initiative in studying the elderly living in rural areas serve as a stimulus to future research that contribute to the maintenance of functional capacity of the elderly.
