Abstract:

Functional Health Literacy (FHL) is the ability to obtain, process and understand information in order to make appropriate decisions regarding self-care, defined by the World Health Organization as a social determinant of health. Its evaluation is important specially between patients with noncommunicable chronic diseases, given the need of permanent health care. Objectives: Evaluate the FHL in patients with chronic cardiovascular diseases and its possible implications on the understanding of the disease and medical instructions and adherence to the measures proposed by health professionals. Methodology: Cross-sectional and quantitative study in which was applied the instrument S-TOFHLA and a structured questionnaire on 345 patients of a cardiovascular disease service in Juiz de Fora. Results: Less than a half (49,3%) of the sample showed adequate FHL. Satisfactory FHL associated with lower age and higher schooling. Lower FHL showed influence on deficitary comprehension of the disease and medical orientations and rare habit to question the professionals. Conclusions: There was high prevalence of inadequate FHL on our sample, related with impaired understanding of the disease and medical instructions, showing the need to optimize medical communication in this group.
