Abstract:

Life expectancy at 60 years old has increased around 9 years since 1940 in Brazil. This increase is a generalized process across country with remarkable differences between regions, however. On the other hand, less is known if the increase in longevity around Brazilian’s regions is being lived with or without good conditions of heath as measured by functional disability indicator. We analyzed changes on the total life expectancy and disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) by sex and age across Brazilian’s regions at two point of time, 1998 and 2013. Information about daily living activities, collected in two Brazilian cross-sectional household surveys (1998 and 2013) were used to calculated the functional disability indicator by sex, age and region. Then, using official life tables we applied the Sullivan Method to estimate the disability-free life expectancy by sex, age and region. The main result showed that between 1998 and 2013 the increase on total life expectancy was accompanied by an increase on disability-free life expectancy. However, increases on DFLE were not significant across North and Mid-West regions. For the other regions around country, the populations live longer and better when health condition was measured by functional disability
