Abstract:

Considering the high psychotropic prescriptions’ rates, mainly at mental health services and the lack of criticism about it, this paper brings the results of a qualitative intervention-research in clinical practices at mental health public services of three large Brazilian cities. Following the principle of the Brazilian psychiatric reform which defends the users’ rights in shared decision making, particularly concerning their treatments, the study used a strategy aiming the empowerment of services’ users at Psychosocial Centers. In order to measure the results, interviews and focal groups were made, including those users engaged in the empowerment strategy and the staff of each service. After analyses, some situations demonstrated it is difficult to avoid the power by mental health professionals over users via administration of psychotropic drugs. Also as part of the results was the lack of dialogue about medications and still the existence of stigmatizing practices where the users’ rights are inhibited or “accepted with caution”.
