Abstract:

The goal of this paper is to list and discuss fundamental guidelines for an expired medications collection program for Brazil and to provide evidence supporting campaigns to raise the population’s awareness for the program’s success.

This is an descriptive revision and documental research work that analyzes official, technical and regulatory documents from Portugal, Canada and Colombia where there are expired medications collection programs in different stages of implementation, some already consolidated, others in initial stages, but all bearing good results. The countries listed above were chosen with the aim to represent Europe, North America and Latin America.

Six common guidelines were listed: co-responsibility in the drug’s manufacturing and distribution chain; minimizing waste as a strategy; executing pilot programs; investigation and classification of generated waste; intersectoral communication between different government levels and campaigns to sensitize and raise the community‘s awareness. Such guidelines provide a foundation for an Expired Medications Collection Program in Brazil.
