Abstract:

This article presents a model of the health care value chain which consists of a schematic representation of Brazilian health care system. The proposed model aims to fit the Brazilian environment and to present a comprehensive and flexible framework that can to be adopted in academic activities and analysis of the health care sector in Brazil. It emphasizes three components: the value chain main activities, grouped in vertical and horizontal echelons; the mission of each echelon and the main value chain flows. This representation consists of six vertical and three horizontal echelons, amounting to nine. These are: knowledge development; supply of products and technologies; health care services; financial intermediation; financing; consumption; regulation; distribution of products; and complementary and support services. Four flows can be used to analyze the value chain: knowledge and innovation; products and services; financial; and information.
