Abstract:

This paper aims to reflect on the current health challenges of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, “travestis”, transgenders, intersex and other sexual and gender minorities (LGBTI+) people in the Brazilian scenario. We adopted a triangulation approach, based on two studies developed in the Southeast and South of Brazil including policy analysis and qualitative research on the perceptions of key informantsthe Unified Public Health System (SUS) - LGBTI+ users, workers and managers. All data were analyzed by an interdisciplinary team of researchers. The main problems faced by the LGBTI+ population were registered, indicating some of the required progresses. Some of these challenges include: LGBTI+ access to SUS; the need of professional training; the decentralization of services sensitive to LGBTI+ for smaller cities and towns; the different forms of violence and discrimination; gaps in health research in specific groups, such as lesbians, bisexuals, intersex and other sexual minorities. The results reinforce the urgency of the full implementation of the “National Policy on Comprehensive Health for LGBT”. We conclude that the recognition of the LGBTI+ health needs contributes to achieve the principles of universality, comprehensiveness and equality, which guide the SUS.
