0317/2013 - Health surveillance and agribusiness: The impact of pesticides on health and the environment. Danger in sight! Vigilância em saúde e agronegócio: Os impactos dos agrotóxicos na saúde e no ambiente. Perigo à vista!
Pesticides are abundantly used by agribusiness. This can cause damage to the environment and health. Institutions in the agriculture, environment and health sectors have legal and statutory duties to supervise its use. Based on interviews carried with managers responsible of the Municipal Secretaries and union leaders representing the workers and farmers. Managers and farmer’s discourse present the belief that pesticides are essential to productivity and do not generate impacts on health and on the environment. No policies or institutional relations monitoring of pesticide use were neither identified nor being under development. Farmers unions are for the agribusiness as rural workers ones were not able to develop joint policies that may benefit the health of the workers themselves, their families and that of the society in general. It is concluded on the need to develop a model for sustainable agriculture, healthy and free of pesticides and that organized society and the institutions responsible build actions that meet the interests of people living and working in the field or consuming the agricultural products mainly controlling risks and consequences that can and should be avoided.

Abstract(resumo):
Os agrotóxicos são usados abundantemente impulsionados pelo agronegócio. Causam danos ao ambiente e à saúde. Seu uso deveria ser fiscalizado pela sociedade e por instituições dos setores da agricultura, meio ambiente e saúde. Para identificar e avaliar estas ações foram entrevistados gestores e funcionários das Secretarias Municipais e dirigentes sindicais dos trabalhadores e produtores rurais. Encontrou-se no discurso de gestores e produtores rurais a crença de que agrotóxicos são fundamentais para a produtividade agrícola e não geram impactos à saúde e ao ambiente. Não se identificou desenvolvimento de ações de vigilância do uso de agrotóxicos. Os sindicatos dos trabalhadores rurais não desenvolveram articulações políticas que possam beneficiar a saúde dos próprios trabalhadores, de seus familiares e da sociedade em geral. Conclui-se sobre a necessidade de se desenvolver um modelo de agricultura sustentável, saudável e livre de agrotóxicos e que a sociedade organizada e as instituições responsáveis construam ações que atendam os interesses da população que vive do trabalho no campo ou que consome os produtos daí colhidos, sobretudo controlando riscos e repercussões que podem e devem ser evitados.
