Abstract:

Understanding that health conditions are dependent upon general factors related to the pattern of development imply the recognition that health sectorization is a limiting factor for the formation of knowledge. It also points to the relevance of investigating the relationship between healthcare and development by contemplating questions about the processes that feed the persistence of the polarization modernization-marginalization, which marked the history of contemporary Brazilian development.
Based on a review of the literature, this essay aims to deepen the knowledge of the structural determinants of the relationship between healthcare and development and its reproduction in the formation of contemporary knowledge, based on dialogue with the ideas of Celso Furtado. It concludes that a virtuous articulation between health and development would demand policies capable of reconciling the harmonious coexistence of the antagonisms represented by the interests of capitalism and social welfare. In Furtado‘s conception, this would be possible by correlating the process of social homogenization with an efficient productive system with a certain technological autonomy.
