Abstract:

This study used data from Telephone-based Surveillance of Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases (VIGITEL) with the purpose of estimate the prevalence of clustering of healthy behaviors (no smoking, no alcohol abuse, regular physical activity in leisure, and recommended consumption of fruits and vegetables), and its temporal trend between 2008 and 2013. Additionally, we evaluated whether the association between education and clustering of three or more healthy behaviors reduced in magnitude in this same period. Prevalence ratios were obtained by Poisson regression. We found that between 2008 and 2013, the clustering prevalence of three or more healthy behaviors increased from 20% to 25% in men, and from 26% to 32% in women, suggesting an increase in prevalence of healthy behaviors patterns in Brazil. This increase was evident in all levels of education. However, the magnitude of the association between education and prevalence of clustering of three or more healthy behaviors remained constant during the period. Thus, the results suggest that educational disparities in clustering of three or more healthy behaviors did not change over time, despite the social improvements observed in the country in recent years.
