Abstract:

Despite advances in AIDS prevention and control, HIV stigma persists and affects access to available resources and the quality of life of people with HIV. In this study we analyze how experiences of HIV-related stigma are expressed among HIV positive young people, in transition to the adult clinic, in the health service, in the family, in the affective-sexual interactions and their relationship with inequalities and social hierarchies. The study involved 31 young people (median age 21) in transition to the adult clinic (G1) and 12 young people (median age 30) who had already made this transition (G2), both followed at a health service in Rio de Janeiro. Among the 43 youths, 70% were women and 65% were infected by vertical transmission. Youths answered questionnaires and participated in focus groups on AIDS stigma and transition to adulthood. Most reported situations of discrimination associated with HIV stigma in daily life and health care. G1 youths showed greater concern about the consequences of HIV disclosure, as well as difficulties with treatment. The G2 reports suggest that the constitution of marital relationships, including HIV-negative partners and children, linked to access to treatment, made it possible to reframe the fear of stigmatization. The findings aim to guide the training and action of professionals involved in the prevention and care of young people living with HIV.
