Abstract:

ABSTRACT
The main contacts and bonds in the early childhood are established in the domestic environment. This environment has a great importance on the offer of good or bad stimuli that can influence development of the child. OBJECTIVES: to analyse the offer of stimuli at the home environment of 2-year-old children, and its association with children’s development delays. METHODOLOGY It is a cross-sectional study, in a low income community of the periphery of the city of Saint Luis – Northeast of Brazil. A random sample of 176 2-year-old children registered at outpatient departments of health of the community was calculated. Two validated instruments were used: the Inventory Home (Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment) and the Gesell’s Scale (development measurement). Data were collected at children’s home. Logistic regressions were carried out taking as outcome variables the Inventory Home (low or middle / high) and the Gesell’s Scale (suspicion of delay/ normal) RESULTS: Familiar low income, low maternal and paternal schooling, nº of resident persons, nº of children
Key words: home environment, child development.
