Abstract:

This was qualitative approach research conducted in the second semester of 2014 through interviews with 12 doctors and 13 nurses who are active managers in large hospitals that are reference centers in urgent and emergency care in the Zona da Mata Mineira/Brazil. The study searched to identify the criteria used by doctors and nurses to discharge patients with disabling neurological lesion, and referrals for access physical rehabilitation programs. The content analysis technique with the thematic modality was used for the treatment of data. The results show that hospital managers still find difficulties in making appropriate referrals to specialized rehabilitation services for these patients, which undermines their autonomy and independence for self-care. It is concluded that managers, in addition to involving caregivers and family members during the preparation for discharging patients with neurological lesions that result in incapacity for self-care, should evaluate the accessibility conditions in their homes and make appropriate referrals for available rehabilitation services in the follow-up period despite the little publicity about the opportunities in the Care for People with Disabilities Network.
