Abstract:

This study has investigated the human development of eight rural cities in the state of Ceará which hold the Integrated Rural Sanitation System (SISAR) and 170 which do not have it. We developed this study based on the indicators of Municipal Human Development (HDI), which are included in the Atlas of Human Development, drawing datathe Demographic Censuses of 1991, 2000 and 2010. We used software R of the statistical analyzes. The results found for the general HDI showed a significant difference between the means of the two groups, which did not occur when the dimensions of income, longevity and education were analyzed. In sum, it has been found that, in general, the implementation of water supply systems contributes to increasing levels of human development, but, as regards the more specific dimensions, this premise has not been statistically confirmed.
