Abstract:

Given the rapid spread of new coronavirus in the prison system, this study aimed to identify spatial clusters for the occurrence of COVID-19 in the prison populationand analyze the temporal trend of confirmed cases in the penitentiary system in Brazil. An ecological study which considered as units of analysis the five macro-regions of Brazil, its 26 states, and the Federal District. The population was composed of all confirmed cases of COVID-19,April 14 to August 31, 2020. The data source used was the Monitoring Panel for COVID-19 cases in the prison systems of the National Penitentiary Department. Descriptive analysis, scanning statistics, and time trend analysis were performed. During the study period, 18,767 cases of COVID-19 were reported in the prison population, of which 4,724 occurred in the state of São Paulo. The scanning statistics enabled the identification of 14 spatial risk clusters for COVID-19 in the PPL, being the highest risk cluster formed by the Federal District. Although the country ends the series with a decreasing behavior, it is observed that in the investigation period the trend showed a mostly increasing behavior. The need for mass testing, monitoring and continuous registration of COVID-19 cases in the country’s prison population is evident.
