Abstract:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is recognized as a complex disease that requires multiple approaches in its treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of a nutritional intervention program on the nutritional status and the quality of life of elderly with non-dialysis dependent CKD. It was a prospective cohort study with 64 elderly of both sexes, with CKD stage 3, and they were treated at a Basic Health Unit, in Diadema / SP. Nutritional intervention consisted of one individual and three collective meetings. Nutritional status was assessed by anthropometry, and it was classified by the body mass index (BMI); the cardiovascular risk was classified by the waist circumference (WC). The quality of life was assessed by the WHOQOL-bref. For statistical analysis, it was used a significance level of 5%. The mean age was 73.95 ± 7.84 years, mostly was female, with low instructional and low income level. Regarding nutritional status, 21.9% were underweight; 32.8%, overweight, and 62.6% showed high or very high cardiovascular risk. The nutritional intervention program allowed positive impact on nutritional status with reduction of BMI and WC, reducing risk of heart illness and promoting the increase on seniors‘ satisfaction related to their health status and improvement of life‘s quality.
