Abstract:

This study aimed to analyze the repercussion of sexual initiation in the number of pregnancies and partners of teenagers with obstetric history in Teresina-PI. This is a cross-sectional study, with 464 teenagers selected by accidental sampling, who gave birth at age of 15-19 years old in the first four months of 2006 in six maternity hospitals in town. The primary data collection happened from May to December 2008 at the participants’ homes after consulting their location in the medical records. The univariate and bivariate analysis were performed by descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation Test or T-test, respectively. The Tukey test was used as post hoc test and significant variables on the bivariate analysis (p<0.05) were also included in the model of Multifactor analysis of variance. Schooling (p<0,001) and menarche age (p<0,001) influenced the age of sexual initiation and this, in turn, presented significant negative correlation (p<0.01) with the number of partners and pregnancies of the teenagers. Thus, as earlier the teenager starts sexual activity, higher the number of pregnancies and sexual partners. Therefore, early sexual initiation had a negative repercussion on this variables among the participants.
